Champagne Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru V.P NV

The V.P. stands for Vieillissement Prolong; (prolonged aging), as the wine spends so long on lees; in this case 84 months. It's a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, and like the entry Grand Cru Brut, the fruit also comes from Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay & all great Grand Cru terroirs. Vinification and ;levage was in oak casks. The dosage is a tiny two grams per litre, so seriously Extra Brut.

The power of the fruit plus the extended lees aging grants such harmony, so much length, so much complexity and texture, that the dosage seems irrelevant. It's a vinous, powerful, super-pure Champagne of great depth and class. Intense and statuesque, yet with prolific finesse as well. After resting seven years in bottle in the Egly-Ouriet cellars, this is now singing. With 50% from the powerful 2012 (the finest vintage since 2008) and 50% from the more forward-drinking 2011, this is perfectly placed for drinking now or with some time on cork.
