The 2023 vintage shows exceptional Semillon fruit expression across the entire Hunter Valley, depth and power are the hallmarks of these wines. The Pokolbin Selection designation is reserved for our best Single Vineyard parcel of each variety in a given vintage. In 2023, the cool, dry, slower ripening period allowed flavour to build more gently over a longer period resulting in very good depth of flavour at modest sugar levels with good retained acidity. A new vineyard for us to work with, the Semillon on the Ernest Hill Vineyard is 50 years old with an east facing hillside aspect and red cracking clay loam soils. While these soils can be a challenge for Semillon, the results however, speak for themselves. Perhaps just the right balance of moisture, heat, and evaporation to create a near perfect balance and harmony in these old vines. This wine reminds me of the great 2009 vintage Semillons when they were young.
