Domaine Chanson Pere et Fils Viré Clessé 2018

From the heart of the Mâcon winegrowing region, south of Burgundy. The two villages Viré and Clessé form a unique "terroir" on slopes facing South-East. In Viré, the soil is chalky with large layers of clay. In Clessé, the soil structure is slightly different with chalk and clay combined with oyster- fossils which convey to the wine a specific minerality.

This is one of the best white wines of the region combining suppleness and minerality. After a cool and rainy winter and a frost episode in April, the warm and dry weather in spring was perfect for flowering. In July and August the weather was more demanding but it became fine again in early September with a true indian summer, allowing a perfect maturation for the grapes.

Apple and citrus aromas are lifted by spicy, resiny oak. Tactile yet smooth, showing good density and salinity. Ultimately round in style but with lovely energy and inner-mouth lift. Nicely integrated oak gives the palate a subtle sweetness. We only wish more $35 white Burgundy was this dignified and driven!
