Jacques Prieur Volnay 1er Cru ‘Clos des Santenots” 2020
The 1er cru “Clos des Santenots” is a monopoly of Domaine Jacques Prieur and defines a very small climate wedged between “Les Santenots du milieu au Sud” and “En Chevret” in the North. Facing due east mid-slope, this plot is located in the heart of the Santenots du Milieu on brown soil, rich in manganese, resting on hard limestone. This entire climate borders on the Meursault appellation, the juices from this plot can be classified in two colors, namely, “Meursault 1er cru” if planted in Chardonnay or “Volnay 1er” cru if planted in Pinot Noir. Aging takes place 100% in oak barrels for 18 months.
“Clos des Santenots” offers us a powerful aromatic where spicy black fruit is omnipresent. Very beautiful development in the glass with a very polished woodiness which subtly envelops the fruit and spices. The floral/mineral reveals all the grandeur of this vintage! On the palate, the fleshy attack develops on a sapid and elongated body. The tannins, juicy as can be, give way to a formidable persistence. Great aging potential!
