The Pawn Malbec 2022
This Langhorne Creek Malbec bursts with intense, alluring aromas of violets, rhubarb, and blackberries that leap from the glass. On the palate, it delivers a bold yet refined experience, featuring the distinctive flavour of Satsuma plum alongside notes of blueberries, dark chocolate, spice, and tobacco. The wine is voluptuous and concentrated, balanced by elegant, fine tannins—a true hallmark of Malbec from this renowned region.
Fermentation took place in a small open-top fermenter affectionately known as "Blue Tongue Lizard," designed to maximise colour and flavour extraction. Partial whole berry fermentation—necessitated by the naturally small berry size—adds further complexity. The ferment was temperature-controlled and followed by several days of extended skin contact before transfer to oak. The wine was then matured in seasoned Hungarian barriques for nine months prior to bottling. Aside from minimal sulphur dioxide, no additives were used in the winemaking process.
While approachable and enjoyable now, this Malbec also has the structure and depth to evolve beautifully over the next 4 to 6 years, offering excellent cellaring potential.
