Varvaglione 1921 ‘12 E Mezzo’ Primitivo del Salento IGP 2023

A structured red wine produced by un Apulian company led by the patron Cosimo Varvaglione who has been producing Primitivo "12 e Mezzo" Salento IGP for 15 years, offering a robust sip capable of expressing the intensity of a grape variety that has become one of the most popular on the international wine scene.

The vineyards are grown in Leporano, a small flat town in the province of Taranto, on clay-rich soil that stores, retains and gradually releases water in the warmer months. The climate is particularly dry but is mitigated by the sea breeze, and thus, together they preserve the bunches from the mold caused by excessive humidity. The harvest takes place at dawn, in the cellar the grapes are carefully selected, then pressed and left to macerate in large steel tanks at a controlled temperature. This is followed by malolactic fermentation to finish with aging in oak barrels for a period of about 9 months.

The elegance of Primitivo "12 e Mezzo" can be immediately admired in the glass where it shows an intense ruby red color. The olfactory bouquet includes fruity hints of ripe red fruit and cherry jam, the passage in barriques gives it an unmistakable vanilla note. A well-structured wine that gives the palate richness and persistence.

We recommend pairing with aged cheeses, first and second courses based on meat and pizza.
